A holistic LSS deployment starts at the highest level with the company’s vision and mission, that is, what is the company’s long term objective. Supporting the vision will be several vision elements or critical success factors. In order to ascertain the progress of achieving the vision, measurement indicators called KPIs are put in place for each vision element to gage its progress.
 
The next step is to understand what are the core or main business processes which drive the business. For example the core processes for insurance can be the customer’s application process, the customer’s claim process or the sale process. These are the main processes which bring in the main profit for the business. There is also a need to understand the enabling processes such as the payment process, the recruitment process, etc. Usually a value stream mapping analysis can be done on the core processes to understand the improvement opportunities. Management will then prioritize the improvement opportunities and set direction for the business by having breakthrough objective/s and daily management objectives.
 
Once the breakthrough objective/s and daily management objectives are set, multi-level strategies are planned to meet these objectives. At the base of these strategies will be projects to meet these objectives. Some of these projects will be LSS projects.
